Frequently asked questions about heat pumps

Frequently asked questions about heat pumps

Before purchasing a heat pump there's a number of factors that need to be considered. We list these below

How long will a heat pump last?

  • The life expectancy of a heat pump depends on a number of factors, such as type, location, and how well maintained they are. Typically heat pumps last between 10 and 15 years, although some of the newer units being manufactured today can last a bit longer.

Are heat pumps noisy?

  • Location of outdoor unit is important to avoid excessive noise and water being generated. A well ventilated area away from bedrooms and neighbours is desirable. Look for outdoor units that have good acoustic insulation built into them.
  • Drainage is another important factor as the units produce large amounts of water in winter particularly when defrosting.

Are heat pumps drafty ?

  • For hi-wall & floor models location of the indoor unit is crucial to avoid drafting & noise. Locating units above or around sitting areas, placing furniture in front or below heat pumps are all things to be avoided to reduce the potential for drafts and get the best performance from your system.
  • Ducted systems largely avoid draft issues as airflow through grilles are set to suit room size using dampers.
  • For more elaborate control these dampers can be motorised to allow air to be shut off to areas e.g. bedrooms if using a whole of home ducted system when only living areas require heating

Will a heat pump heat the whole home ?

  • Hi-wall & floor units are designed to heat individual rooms. Over sizing to heat adjoining areas is risky as drafting & noise issues can result. If doing multiple areas either more hi-wall/floor units are required.
  • Alternatively a ducted system(s) could be used.

Do heat pumps heat in cold weather ?

  • All heat pump systems need to defrost the outdoor unit as part of their normal operation particularly the closer to 0oC they get.
  • The crucial thing in selecting any heat pump is what outside temperature can they operate down to. They must be able to function in subzero conditions

Can anyone sell a heat pump ?

  • As with anything it's always best to approach people that specialize in a product to ensure the right system is installed. With heat pumps now using higher pressure gases to limit global warming emissions it's important only qualified people with a Refrigerant Fillers Certificate install & service heat pump systems.
  • Upcoming legislation will make this requirement a necessity
